2. What Type of Estimate Is Provided?

Moving estimates offer different levels of price certainty, and it's your move consultant who will determine the most appropriate type for your situation. Typically, these fall into two categories: binding and non-binding. A binding estimate guarantees a fixed price, providing complete cost predictability.  

Conversely, a non-binding estimate is subject to change based on the actual weight of your belongings and the services provided. There's also a hybrid option, a binding not-to-exceed or guaranteed rate reduction, which offers a balance of price certainty and flexibility.

Two primary options are typically offered: Full Value Protection (FVP) and Waiver of Full Valuation. FVP provides the most comprehensive protection, meaning if an item is damaged or lost, it will be repaired or replaced at its current market value. On the other hand, the Waiver of FVP offers significantly limited coverage, typically reimbursing you at a mere $0.60 per pound per item, regardless of its actual worth.

“Without adequate FVP, you could find yourself significantly undercompensated for valuable items,” Phil explains, “potentially leading to substantial financial loss and emotional distress. Taking the time to fully grasp these valuation options and discussing them thoroughly with your mover is the best way to safeguard your possessions and ensure peace of mind throughout your relocation.
