How does a local move work?

Six steps, from the first survey to the day you would need a claim.

  1. Survey

In your home is best; a phone estimate or virtual survey works too. Your estimator lists what is moving and checks tight corners, long carries, access and where the truck can park.

  2. Written estimate

You get the estimate in writing, with packing or other services added if you want them.

  3. Confirmation

When you book, you sign the contract and a move coordinator calls to confirm your move and its details. For local moves, book at least 10–14 days ahead; about 30 days is ideal.

  4. Moving day

Setting up protection is the first thing the crew does: floor protection always, plus corners and banisters where there will be a lot of traffic. Every home is a little different, so they adjust it to yours. Then they load, drive and unload.

  5. Delivery & walkthrough

Items are checked off an inventory sheet as they are placed, anything taken apart is put back together, and debris is removed then or later if you need time.

  6. Claims, if needed

If something is damaged, start at File a Claim.

How much do local movers cost?

Local moves are billed by the hour, so the total depends on how long the job takes. Compare the total cost between movers, not the hourly rate.

Hours on the job
You pay for however long the movers and the truck are engaged in your move, with a usual four-hour minimum.
Travel time
Travel or drive time is charged.
Crew size
Your estimator sets the crew from how much you have: usually 2 movers for a small move, about 3 for a mid-size move, 4 for a large one, and 5 or 6 for a very large home.
Access
Stairs, long carries and tight corners take longer. Your estimator looks for them at the survey.
Extra services
Packing and unpacking are priced separately. Setting up or taking down specialized equipment, such as gym equipment, can add a charge.
Protection
Full Value Protection is priced separately. It is not free; your estimator quotes it.
Typical total costLocal moves start around $1,000, with a typical estimate around $3,300.Bailey's Moving & Storage estimates for local and in-state moves, Oct 2025–Oct 2026 (620 estimates).

Is a cheaper hourly rate a better deal?

Usually not. Between movers with similar rates, $10 an hour on an 8 to 10 hour move comes to less than $100 in most cases. Training and speed matter more: a better-trained crew at a higher rate can finish faster and cost you less than a cheaper crew that takes longer. Very cheap budget movers are often new companies, a few years or even months old, without the resources to solve problems in your home. Established movers have warehouses, tenure and crews trained by people with 40 or more years in the business. Bailey's Moving & Storage is a carrier, not a broker: our own crew and truck do your move.

What do local moving customers say?

Public reviews from real customers that mention a local move.

We did a local move with Bailey’s. Efraim, John and Samuel did a great job. On time, responsive and careful of our house and belongings, especially in the rain. Lincoln and Rachel were also on point and responsive from the office. This is our second move with Bailey’s and we definitely would use them again!

Used Bailey Movers for a local move earlier this month. From estimate to finish, the experience was great. Jamie was super friendly and thorough in the estimate and gave me some good tips. In move day, Chris, Isaiah, and Josiah were extremely prompt, organized, efficient polite, and extremely friendly. Would totally use them again!

How far ahead should I book?

Are you a broker?

No. Bailey's Moving & Storage is a carrier and never brokers your move. Inside Colorado and Utah we operate on our own authority.

What do I need to do before the movers arrive?

If you're packing yourself, have every box packed and ready (if we're packing, that's done before the truck is loaded). Have someone there to show the crew what goes and where. And be ready to stop living in the home for the day: the crew loads everything, and it goes faster than most people think.

What won't movers move?

Take valuables and plants with you. Explosives, ammunition and corrosive materials should stay with you too: the crew will not load them.

No. Full Value Protection is extra: it is priced for your move, not free. Your estimator quotes it with your estimate.
