Quick answer

  • CratesWe usually bring crates out or have a crating specialist build them, sometimes on site in your driveway. We arrange it all and it is built into your quote.
  • PriceDriven mostly by the size and complexity of each item and crate.
  • Lead time
  • High-value itemsDeclare them on a high-value item inventory. Valuation works differently for them; your estimator walks you through it.
  • ProtectionFull Value Protection is extra. It is priced, not free; ask your estimator.

How does crating and specialty moving work?

Five steps, from the estimate to delivery.

  1. Spot it at the estimate

Point out pianos, safes, art, glass and anything fragile or valuable so your estimator can plan for it.

  2. Measure & plan

Each crate is unique: the item is measured, and any special protection it needs is worked out.

  3. Build or rig

Crates are brought out ready-made or built on site, sometimes in your driveway. Heavy items get the right equipment and hardened floor protection.

  4. Load & secure

  5. Deliver & uncrate

Your items are delivered and placed.

What does crating and specialty moving cost?

It depends mostly on the size and complexity of the item. Compare the total cost of your move, specialty items included, not a single rate.

Size & complexity
Each crate is unique and is measured for the item, so bigger and more complicated pieces cost more.
Special protection
Some items need extra protection inside the crate, evaluated item by item.
Value
The value of the item can change how it is crated and protected.
Access
Excessive stairs or long carries can add charges to a move. That applies to the move as a whole, not just to pianos.
Protection
Full Value Protection is priced separately. It is not free; your estimator quotes it.

Could a cheaper general mover do it?

Possibly, and it may cost less. For a grand piano, marble, a chandelier or a high-value piece, you may still want the crate, the equipment and the valuation planned together at your estimate. Bailey's Moving & Storage is a carrier and never brokers your move, and we arrange any crating specialist ourselves.

Custom crating

What gets crated?

Typically glass, marble, precious art, chandeliers and taxidermy. Other large, expensive or fragile items may be crated too, especially the more valuable and fragile they are. It is decided case by case.

We can build crates in-house, but usually we bring crates out or have a crating specialist do it. We arrange and handle all of it, and it is built into your quote.

Pianos

Can you move my piano?

Yes. We handle all types of pianos, and there is no real charge difference between sizes. Stairs or long carries can add to the cost of the move as a whole.

Have it tuned after the move, once it has rested for at least 48 hours.

Safes and heavy items

Can you move a safe or other heavy items?

Yes. Our crews bring the moving equipment and specialized, hardened floor protection that can take the weight as heavy items roll over it.

Safes over about 800 lb go to a third-party specialist with dedicated equipment, and we arrange it for you.

Fine art, antiques and high-value items

How do you handle fine art, antiques and high-value items?

We wrap them and pack them in sturdy cartons like dish packs. If they go into storage, they stay in our temperature-controlled warehouses, like everything we store. If something needs more than that, ask your estimator about the options.

Declare high-value items on a high-value item inventory form. Valuation works slightly differently for them, and your estimator reviews the details with you.

TVs and electronics

Do I need the original TV box?

Original boxes are preferred when you still have all of the pieces, including the foam inserts. Depending on the TV, the move and how it will be handled, a TV crate may be the better choice; your estimator will tell you.

Firearms

Can you move firearms?

We move firearms. We do not move ammunition. Read the details before your move.

What do specialty-move customers say?

Public reviews from real customers that mention pianos, safes, art, antiques or crating.

Mathew and his team (Paca and Ricky, later joined by Francis, and Kilioni to do the piano and finish up) were professional, hard working, exceptional. They should be the ones to move us into our new home in about one year as we are not sure how they dissembled and stores much of our furniture, exercise equipment, etc.

In the middle of a very warm day, Bean and Erik carried boxes, an antique trunk, and pieces of a very heavy closet, all in a very good mood. Thank you!

Bryan and Manny went above and beyond. They made any adjustment necessary to make sure the artwork was all hung correctly. They were friendly and worked hard. There were a few little scuffs that they promptly fixed or filled in leaving the space nice. I would highly recommend either of them!
