How does a long-distance move work?

Seven steps, from the first survey to the day you would need a claim.

  1. Survey

In your home is best; virtual works too. Your estimator lists what is moving and checks tight corners, long carries, access and where the truck can park, so nothing surprises the crew on load day.

  2. Written estimate

Binding or non-binding. Either way, you get it in writing.

  3. Pack

Choose full, partial or customer pack. Our crew usually packs the day before loading, or a few days ahead for bigger homes. Packing is priced per carton, labor and materials included.

  4. Load & weigh

Your belongings are loaded against the inventory. On a non-binding estimate, the truck is weighed empty and full on certified scales.

  5. Transit

Delivery usually comes about 10 to 14 days after pickup, on average.

  6. Delivery

The driver walks your new home with you and hands you an inventory check-off sheet. Items are checked off as they are placed, anything taken apart is put back together, and debris is removed then or later if you need time.

  7. Claims, if needed

If something arrives damaged, start at File a Claim.

How is a long-distance (interstate) move priced?

By your inventory or weight, the miles and the services you choose. Compare total cost between movers, not a single rate.

Weight
Only on non-binding estimates: you pay for the actual weight, the difference between the empty and full truck on certified scales. On a binding estimate, the binding price reflects the contracted inventory.
Distance
Miles from your origin in Colorado or Utah to your destination.
Services
Packing (priced per carton, materials included) and storage-in-transit add to the total.
Protection
Full Value Protection is priced separately. It is not free; your estimator quotes it.
Estimate type
Binding: the binding price reflects the contracted inventory, so it holds as long as the inventory does; adding or removing items on load day changes it through a change order. Non-binding: billed on actual weight.
Typical total cost$5,000 to $7,000 for most movesMedian total is about $7,000. Moves can cost much more depending on where you are going.

Is there a cheaper way?

Sometimes. Brokers and container options can cost less. People still choose Bailey's Moving & Storage for accountability: every one of our over-the-road drivers is a registered Allied Van Lines driver, so your move follows the same Allied standards, policies and procedures whether a Bailey's driver or an Allied network driver hauls it. We also run our own warehouses in Denver, Salt Lake, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs and Utah County, and claims go through a third-party adjusting process.

In-state moving

Moving across Colorado or Utah instead?

A move that starts and ends in the same state is an in-state (intrastate) move, even over a long distance, and it is handled differently from an interstate move.

In Colorado, household goods movers are regulated by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Our permit is HHG-00739; you can check it on the PUC permit search.

How it is priced: in Colorado, in-state moves under about 50 miles are almost always billed by the hour. Farther than that, origin to destination, they are usually priced by weight and miles.

Common routes include Denver to the mountains and back, Grand Junction to the Denver metro, moves within the Wasatch Front, and the Wasatch Front to Utah mountain towns and back.

Winter on I-70 and the passes can slow a move down, but it rarely changes the price.

What do long-distance customers say?

Public reviews from real customers that mention a long-distance move.

Armando, Jake, Cindy, and the moving and packing crews did a fantastic job on an interstate move (UT-CO). They packed a 3-bed, 2.5-bath residential home in a day, and by 3 pm the next day, it was all loaded into the truck. Every item arrived on time and in good shape at the destination. They were always helpful and attentive, offering an outstanding customer experience. I was initially tempted to use a cheaper service, but the quality and experience made it worth the cost. I would contract them again.

I was referred to Connor Spornak by my long time trusted realtor and personal friend, who didn’t steer me wrong. Connor was very responsive through the entire process from the beginning video call in December 2025 to final delivery in March 2026 for our 1800+ mile cross-country move from central Florida to Colorado. We made multiple weight adjustments to control cost and Connor was very patient in explaining the options while noteably coming in lower than the other competing quote. I also interacted with his assistant, Megan, who was a delight to work with as well. In contrast with our previous moving company experience in 2020, we used another national moving company and had several damaged furniture pieces involving their claims process along with an unexplainable lost sectional in one of their warehouses. But not this time. All the contents Bailey’s transported were well cared for and were delivered on schedule without a single incident. I have nothing but praise and I would highly recommend Connor and the Baileys Moving and Storage team!

Long-distance moving questions

Short answers first, with a link when there is more to read.

Is a long-distance move the same as an interstate move?

Usually. A move that crosses state lines is an interstate move, and you get the interstate rights booklet with your estimate. A long move that stays within Colorado or Utah is an in-state (intrastate) move, which is handled differently; in Colorado, in-state movers are regulated by the PUC.

How much does a long-distance move cost?

Most long-distance moves from Colorado and Utah total between $5,000 and $7,000, with a median of about $7,000. Where you are going matters most, and some moves cost much more. Compare total cost, not a single rate.

How long does delivery take?

On average, about 10 to 14 days from the date of pickup.

What is the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate?

A binding estimate guarantees the total cost: the binding price reflects the contracted inventory and services. Add or remove items, stops or services on load day and the price changes through a change order. A non-binding estimate is a forecast; you pay for the actual weight, measured empty and full on certified scales.

What is the difference between a broker and a carrier?

A broker sells your move to someone else. Bailey's Moving & Storage is a carrier and never brokers your move: we haul with carrier authority as an Allied Van Lines agent and on our own authority within Colorado and Utah.

Read: van lines vs. brokers
Is valuation included?

No. Full Value Protection is extra: it is priced for your move, not free. Your estimator quotes it with your estimate.

Read: why is valuation extra for my move?
Can you store my things in between homes?

Yes. Storage-in-transit keeps your things in vaults in our temperature-controlled warehouses. After 90 days it becomes permanent storage; we may extend it another 90 days, depending on circumstances. Both are billed per hundredweight, and both need a valuation level.

How do claims work?

File a claim form and the damage is inspected through photos, video or in person, through a third-party adjusting process (Allied Van Lines or Bailey's Moving & Storage directly). Accepted claims are repaired, replaced or settled in cash, depending on the valuation you chose; even full valuation has limits. Most claims are handled within weeks.

File a claim
How far ahead should I book?

Book a long-distance move at least 45 days ahead to get the dates you want, and even earlier if you're moving at the end of a month. In summer, book as far ahead as you can.

Can you move my car?

Yes. Cars usually don't ride on the moving van; they travel by car carrier. Bailey's Moving & Storage organizes and coordinates the car shipment for you.
