Military Moves

Bailey's Moving & Storage has served military members for over 30 years. On government-arranged moves we are the local agent for the moving company that holds your shipment, and we also move service members who choose a personally procured move (PPM).

Quick answer

  • Our roleOn Defense Personal Property Program (DP3) moves, Allied Van Lines is typically the carrier and Bailey's Moving & Storage is the local agent: survey, packing, loading, storage and delivery.
  • Two pathsA household goods (HHG) shipment you schedule through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), or a PPM, where you move yourself or hire your own mover (source: Military OneSource).
  • PPMIf you hire us, we bill you like any household goods customer and give you the invoice for your reimbursement paperwork. The government pays up to 100% of what it would have cost to move you, based on your weight allowance (source: Military OneSource).
  • ClaimsOn DP3 moves, claims go through the moving company that holds your shipment. On a PPM with us, claims work like any interstate move.
  • EntitlementsCheck current guidance with your transportation office; rules and allowances change.

How does a DP3 military move work?

Six steps, from your orders to a claim if you need one.

  1. Orders

You need official orders or a letter-in-lieu of orders to schedule the move (source: Military OneSource).

  2. Book in DPS

Schedule your shipment in DPS, the official portal for DP3 moves; your transportation office can help (source: Military OneSource).

  3. Survey

When the moving company that holds your shipment uses us as its agent, our estimator surveys your home.

  4. Pack & load

Our crew packs and loads your household goods at origin.

  5. Storage & delivery

At destination we can hold your shipment in storage-in-transit and deliver it to your new home.

  6. Claims, if needed

Give the moving company written notice of loss or damage, at delivery or in DPS after delivery, then file an itemized claim in DPS (source: Military OneSource).

Who pays for a military move?

It depends on the path you choose. Your orders and your transportation office set what is authorized.

DP3 shipment
Booked through the program in DPS, not with us directly.
PPM
For a member-elected PPM you are paid 100% of the Government Constructed Cost, the amount the government would have paid to move you, based on the actual weight you move (verified with weight tickets) up to your authorized weight. You need approval from your transportation office first (source: Military OneSource PPM fact sheet).
PPM paperwork
Turn in your paperwork within 45 days of the planned move start date (source: Military OneSource). If you hired us, we give you the invoice and backup paperwork; you submit it to your transportation office or JPPSO.
Protection
On a PPM with us, Full Value Protection is priced separately. It is not free; your estimator quotes it.

Should I do a PPM or a DP3 shipment?

It is your call, with your transportation office. A PPM gives you control and the incentive payment, but you manage the move; Military OneSource recommends a PPM if you have valuable or essential items you want to protect (source: Military OneSource). If you choose a PPM and hire Bailey's Moving & Storage, we move you like any other household goods customer.

Storage

Can you store my household goods?

Yes. We offer both storage-in-transit (SIT), which holds a shipment coming in from out of state until it can be delivered, and non-temporary storage (NTS), which is longer-term storage near you.

What do military families say?

Public reviews from real customers that mention a military or PCS move.

I don’t usually do reviews, but I’d like to extend my thanks and compliments to Morgan and his team. I am a large rigging company that installs airport security equipment. We had an amazing experience with Bailys and everything went flawlessly. We worked with them for over a period of eight weeks on a job that had lots of moving parts and Logistics. Baileys was there every step of the way, giving us access to whatever we needed and supporting our deployment. We work with different companies all over the country and we gotta give Bailys a huge thumbs up and thank them once again for helping us to be so successful with this job.

We are moving out of state and had the packers for two days (large 4 bed, 4 car tandem garage, basement, office, loft) and movers for one day. Since we are military family we have had several out of state moves and I remember all my past experiences with prior moves as unpleasant and difficult. Like going to get your braces tightened at the orthodontist. Bailey’s has been the most organized by far, not without hiccups but those hiccups have been handled quickly and professionally. And I’ve had far more hiccups/problems with other companies. I think this company really values our time as clients and has treated us, our home, and our possessions with respect. I have to shout out Tim and Megan who have been utmost professionals and packed our stuff with care. I’ll update this review with the rest of my experience as they are holding onto our stuff in long term storage until we find a house.

Bailey's moving and storage did an amazing job for us. The communication from Joannie was timely, concise and friendly. Linda and her team packed our 3000sqft home fast and neatly all while being extremely respectful, polite and just plain fun to be around. Jake and his crew came on day 3 for loading and did an awesome job, they were kind and respectful and took steps to ensure the home was protected while loading the truck. They were very fast and efficient at both loading and packing. Between the excellent communication, timeliness, positive nature and overall skills provided by Bailey's, this interstate move was the smoothest and less stressful of our military many PCS moves.
